THE BEST MOVIES BY FARR — JOHN FARR HELPS
PARENTS DISCOVER GREAT MOVIES FOR THEIR KIDS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 12, 2007

John Farr, a well-known film columnist, speaker, and advocate of quality film, has made it his mission to help parents find movies on DVD that nourish the hearts and minds of young viewers. This article details his efforts to do just that, including the launch of his new site, Best Movies By Farr.

NEW YORK — When it comes to selecting family movies in this increasingly on-demand world, why settle only for "what's new," when just by broadening your horizons a little, you can experience a superb film every time?

All too often, the latest spectacles aimed at kids and teens are nothing more than tired old stories dressed up in fancy modern clothes. Even worse are the ultra-violent power fantasies masquerading as age-appropriate escapism. Just like junk food, the marketers of these nutrient-deficient audiovisual products want to hook young minds on easy laughs and whiz-bang sensory overload—the very opposite of what movies can actually teach children. That's why John Farr, a well-known film columnist, speaker, and advocate of quality film, has made it his mission to help parents locate movies on DVD that nourish the hearts and minds of young viewers.

Beginning May 1st, the newly launched BestMoviesbyFarr.com makes it simple for any parent, caretaker or educator to access more than 1300 choices in John's expansive home library, all searchable by time period, genre, actor/director, country, or mood. Providing quick summaries of each selection, along with a short statement on what makes each film great, BestMoviesbyFarr.com separates the gems from the junk, and lets you buy or rent every title listed, with the goal of providing an enjoyable and rewarding film experience for kids and parents alike—every time.

The site combines conversational clarity with exceptional functionality and ease of use. Want to find an outstanding family movie from Pixar Studios, or one directed by Japanese Anime Master Hiyao "Spirited Away" Miyazaki? No problem. Enter the name in a search field, or search under Family, and you'll find examples of only their most exceptional work, which you can buy, rent, or just read about. Farr's approach is to go beyond the obvious in celebrating timeless films, applauding the best aspects of our present film culture ("Toy Story," "Microcosmos") without losing the value and perspective of movies from simpler times ("Shane," "Modern Times," "The Day the Earth Stood Still").

Updated weekly, BestMoviesbyFarr.com includes a number of tabbed features: New to DVD (to keep up with the quick pace of releases), Cornerstone Titles (a helpful guide to the all-time greats), Pick of the Day and Theme of the Week (bundled under rubrics like Animal Movies, Voyage to Italy, etc.), and Movie Nights (multiple sure-fire picks for group gatherings and home entertaining). John, whose own Blog, FarronFilm.com, links to the home page of BestMoviesbyFarr.com with interviews, newspaper columns, and movie chat, also provides a tool for users to add comments and offer feedback on the site, as well as what they've seen and loved.

Since his early years, Farr has nurtured an abiding love of movies and the entire filmmaking process. He started Best Movies By Farr not long after leaving his position as Senior Partner at Ogilvy & Mather, a Madison Avenue Ad Agency. John says: "Most box-office movies target teens with violence and special effects. Balance is important, and with over 70,000 titles available on DVD, finding great titles for kids as an alternative is always possible. It's not about what's out, it's about what's great."

Recently, the Best Movies by Farr team has taken 'movie nights' the road, a format in which John hosts and lectures around the country at clubs and theaters, schools and colleges, introducing great films to enthusiastic audiences. His initial touring has already left a trail of interest among younger movie viewers, and after having the opportunity to hear and see John's movie lectures, most clients have requested an encore presentation.

This summer, the re-launched Best Movies by Farr Web site will further up the ante, providing parents and movie lovers with even more recommendations, as well as video clips, podcasting downloads, audio commentary, and blogging opportunities with John. As before, BestMoviesbyFarr.com and its companion Blog, FarronFilm.com, will enable film lovers everywhere to buy or rent the carefully selected movies that John recommends.

In a world where kids are inundated by media noise and empty, big-budget pyrotechnics, such conscientious taste-making is truly a blessing.
